I am currently developing a documentary photo series where I am to document older, single women who are building communities for themselves outside of the traditional family unit.

This is my mum, Julia, pictured at a community farm project that has come to mean so much to her over the last few years.

I asked my mum if I could photograph her here as, since her split from her partner a few years ago, I have witnessed her rebuild herself, find a new community, and forge meaningful friendships through this small green space where fruits and vegetables are grown and shared.

Most importantly, the project has helped her to navigate unfamiliar territory: reshaping her identity as a single woman in her 60s.

And so, here lies the inspiration for a new personal photography project that seeks to document older single women defying society’s expectations and reclaiming their identities through their passions.
